Dr. Nila Devanath's Statement on Military Action Involving the U.S., Israel, and Iran
Statement on Recent Military Action
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Dr. Nila Devanath
Like many of you, I’m closely watching the reports of military strikes involving the United States, Israel, and Iran.
As someone who represents a community with one of the largest concentrations of military families in the country, this hits close to home. In Hampton Roads and across Virginia’s Second District, foreign policy decisions are not abstract. They affect our neighbors, spouses, sons and daughters in uniform.
I believe we must be clear-eyed about our national security interests. But we must also be disciplined and cautious about entering or expanding foreign conflicts. Our service members should never be placed in harm’s way without:
- Clear congressional authorization
- A defined and achievable objective
- A comprehensive strategy that protects American lives and interests
Too often, Washington rushes into foreign entanglements while families here at home are struggling with rising healthcare costs, housing affordability, and economic uncertainty. We cannot afford endless wars abroad while critical needs go unmet here in our own communities.
As a doctor and a lawyer, I believe in accountability, constitutional process, and exhausting every diplomatic option before resorting to force. Strength is not measured only by military action — it is measured by restraint, wisdom, and putting our people first.
Tonight, I am thinking of our military families, our veterans, and every family impacted by these decisions. We owe them leadership that is steady, responsible, and focused on peace whenever possible.
We must prioritize American families and avoid being pulled into another prolonged foreign war.
